Elche in the south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca is 250 000 palm trees for 250 000 inhabitants. The palm grove of Elche is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is said to have been created by the city’s first Muslim inhabitants. Its distribution favoured cultivation because already at the time the rains were low.
In fact, many parks are worth visiting.
The most beautiful of all is the Curé’s garden (Huerto del Cura), a small romantic paradise between cacti and pools under palm trees. An exceptional palm tree grows there, a completely surrealist 8-trunk tree that all crowned heads wanted to see at the end of the 19th century, starting with the Austrian empress Sissi, hence her nickname of the imperial palm tree.
If you come in the middle of summer, the splendid municipal park will enchant you with its diversity and microclimate.
Plaza de la Glorieta is the very heart of the city. From this one the pedestrian streets leave. They take you to the various shops, including the famous Zara located in the old theatre.
The most beautiful architectural ensemble is the square of the Basilica of Santa Maria, a luminous medieval wonder. Just next door you will find the old ramparts, including the Torre de la Calahorra and the remains of the medieval Arab baths.
The archaeological treasure of the city is represented by the Dama de Elche. It is the bust of a very beautiful woman in ceremonial dress, carved in a block of limestone, wearing tiara and jewellery on her ears. I will find a resemblance to Princess “Leia of Star Wars”.
The lady’s replicas are present everywhere, in gardens, parks, squares, and of course in the archaeological museum, to be visited by history lovers in order to understand the long history of this exceptional place.
The shoe is the second emblem of the city. You are in one of the world’s capitals of high-end footwear. To do so, we invite you to stroll around the Torellano polygon where you will find all the factories and factory shops.
Beaches and nature park!
In the Campo d’Elche, there is also the El Hondo Natural Park, a preserved area of brackish water, reed beds and marshes inhabited by birds.
Located 12 km from the Mediterranean Sea, you will enjoy its various beaches. Santa Pola its port and its salt mines. El pinet and its fishermen’s houses among the dunes and pine forests. The majestic and wild beach of Carabassi in Gran Alacant.
